Dear newsletter subscribers, it’s the day of my public LinkedIn Storytelling Secrets workshop!
It is also five weeks to the end of 2023. Where did all the time go?
Chatting with my colleagues yesterday, we all agreed that because the elasticity of "COVID time" has gone away, time is now hurtling forward at an unrelenting pace.
Today, I want to turn my Find Your Superpower newsletter into a gratitude journal.
I want to talk about all of the ways I pushed myself to grow and try something new and scary this year.
I also want to talk about all the ways I cared for myself and practiced self-love this year.
This is my journal about self-renewal and change. Here it goes:
1. I launched my podcast: The Science of Work
This year, I launched season 1 of my podcast, The Science of Work. My podcast can be found on Spotify and Apple Podcast. It was such an honor to interview seven of my friends and industry colleagues on topics such as career development and finding our ikigai. Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat even came on for a bonus episode to cap off the season. I cannot stress how challenging and complex it was for me to learn how to organize and launch a podcast, and how much it took me out of my comfort zone.
2. I took a one-month sabbatical in April
For the first time in five years of entrepreneurship and running a high-contact-sport media business through a pandemic, I took a one-month sabbatical. Here’s what I did NOT do for an entire month: no HR meetings, no Zoom client calls, no face-to-face meetings, and nearly zero email correspondence. Instead, I traveled with my family to Malaysia and solo to South Korea, and participated in a wide variety of social activities and sports that I would have typically declined due to work and family commitments.
3. I discovered the law of abundance and it changed my life
Next, I started implementing the law of abundance in my life. I’ve been reading about the abundance mindset for years, but this was the first time I started to consciously practice it in my life and work. And boy has it been life-changing. The law of abundance is a belief that there is an unlimited source of whatever we need available to us at all times. When I started writing about it on LinkedIn, I was amazed by how many people were searching for a new way of living and thinking.
4. I decided to take my company fully remote
This year, I decided to take my company fully remote. As I shared, status quo held me back from letting go of my office lease for many years, but I decided it was time to embrace the future of work. In a LinkedIn post, I calculated that I saved an entire month each year from working remotely. Because human beings crave physical contact and interaction—everything we lost in the COVID-19 pandemic—I took my entire company for a 3D2N company annual retreat to Bali, Indonesia in October. We had a blast white-water rafting and visiting Balinese temples. At the end of the trip, many tears were shed!
5. I started taking on 1:1 LinkedIn coaching clients
While I have trained corporates from MNCs, government agencies and academic institutions for many years, this was the first time that I explored 1:1 coaching. The response has been unbelievable; clients who completed a retainer with me are now referring new clients to me. I work closely with founders, CEOs, managing directors and entrepreneurs, and they go through a huge metamorphosis with my close support. I am nearly booked to the end of Q1 2024, which is a testimony to the value I give to each of my clients!
6. I published my first e-book, The LinkedIn Success Mindset
As a publisher of nearly 12 years, I have published 100s of books and magazines. But this was the first time that I felt compelled to put words on "paper." I share about the three laws that have changed my life completely, and not just on LinkedIn: The Law of Attraction, The Law of Reciprocity, and the Law of Abundance. Professor Kishore Mahbubani, former Singapore Ambassador to the UN, kindly wrote the foreword to my e-book, while many LinkedIn Top Voices and LinkedIn senior management have also added testimonials.
7. I’m starting to create content again on TikTok and Instagram!
You are the first to know that I am starting to prioritize my two smaller channels, Instagram and TikTok. If you happen to use those social media platforms, I am excited to connect with you there and share my new content with you. As a content creator, it is draining to create content for others all the time. But once you create your own personal content again, you replenish your reserves and find new motivation and inspiration to help your clients!
... and there you go, the seven ways I changed or self-renewed this year!
How about you, what did you do for yourself this year?
Dust off your journal and write an entry in it!
