If my brand is my net worth... then where is the money?

I have run many corporate branding workshops.

I have sold 100s of copies of my online branding masterclass.

I have led four LinkedIn bootcamps and built countless strong personal brands.

While I am proud of what I have achieved, I believe I have made one big, fatal assumption...

My big and fatal assumption is that industry experts and senior professionals would know how to monetize a powerful brand and make real money from it. 

I realize now that I may have been expecting a little bit too much.

Please let me explain.

 

Post on LinkedIn, start a newsletter, write a book... now what?

You may have heard the above advice from someone before.

You may have even heard that advice from me!

I have literally helped my clients go from 10-20 likes per post to 100-200 likes per post, which is dark magic, by the way.

They would report back to me six months later:

“Hey Juliana, yeah thanks, I’m doing really well on LinkedIn now. I'm getting lots of comments and DMs on my posts, which I never got before. Senior industry leaders are DM-ing me all the time now! Also, I am getting many invitations to coffee, and I keep pinching myself that this is happening. But nothing big has happened yet.

Nothing? Nothing is a big word!

All this time, I was waiting to hear these magical words: “I’m making more money now.

As Tom Cruises character Jerry Maguire would say, “Wheres the money? Show me the money!”

But I didn’t always hear those words. 

Do you know why?

They had no idea what to do next. They could only say, “Now what? What do I do next?”

Because with that incredible brand they had built up, they were now patiently waiting for financially lucrative opportunities to appear in front of them, on a silver platter.

This is the adult equivalent of waiting for a boy to ask us out for prom.

No, my friend. That’s not how we roll.

That is too passive.

With a powerful brand, our net worth will increase only if we know how to convert all of that brand value into bank value.

 

The missing link: going from brand value to bank value

If you’ve ever heard this saying, “Your reputation is your net worth,” then you would agree that how strong your brand is should also determine how much money you're making every month.

The truth is, I frequently see people with amazing reputations and brands having a lower net worth than they would expect for themselves.

Have you ever had the feeling that you’re being undervalued and underappreciated for your contributions, experience and knowledge? Yep, that’s what I mean.

Just to clarify for any critic reading this, the goal is not necessarily money as an end point. I am merely using money here as it is a universally accepted currency and a shorthand everyone understands and often aspires to. Net worth can also refer to job opportunities, promotions within a company, industry awards, invitations to join board directorships and charities, keynote speaker invitations, more respect from industry peers. Basically, all the good stuff that you dream of having.

I hope you get it now.

I fear that I have unlocked Step 1 (brand) but not Step 2 (bank). 

You see, my branding bootcamps and workshops assume the following:

✅ that my job is primarily to help my clients build a powerful brand 

✅ that they would know how to harness their brand value

✅ ... and monetize that brand value swiftly and effectively

I understand now that I have to work harder for my clients.

To level up as a branding coach, I need to also write an SOP to take them from building a brand to making money from it.
